About the prototype
In 1996, Washington State set out to give the Pacific Northwest a faster, more modern train, and chose Talgo to build it. The Series VI trainsets entered service in 1999 as the face of the new Amtrak Cascades, linking Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, along one of the most scenic routes in North America.
Each set is a string of short, low cars riding on shared single-axle rodals, with a Power car at one end and a Baggage car at the other. The car bodies hang from the tops of their suspension columns, so the whole train leans naturally into curves and takes them faster than conventional coaches, with no tilting machinery at all. The Power car’s tall batwing end bridges the step from the locomotive down to the low Talgo cars.
Named for the great peaks of the Northwest, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Mount Hood and Mount Olympus, and joined by a fifth set in 2004, the Series VI trainsets carried more than 14 million passengers and became one of the most recognisable trains in the country. A Series VI Bistro car is preserved at the Northwest Railway Museum.

How reserving works
- It’s free. A reservation isn’t a purchase, charge or deposit, and it doesn’t commit you to buying.
- We’ll email you a link to confirm. Your place counts once you click it, and unconfirmed holds are released after 24 hours.
- When all 25 are reserved, the form becomes a waitlist, and released sets go to the next person in line.
- Changed your mind? Your confirmation email has a link that releases your place.
